Practical Information

Lebanon suffers from a shortage of electricity, even more so after the revolutions in Egypt and the ongoing crisis in Syria, when supply contracts between these countries and Lebanon were terminated. Expect periodic (scheduled) power outages that, depending on the area, range from three hours to virtually around the clock.

To check on when to expect a power outage, one can download a mobile app, such as Beirut Electricity Cut Off or Beirut Electricity. During electricity cuts, electricity is provided by privately-owned generators, although many residences lack this back-up. The latter could be relevant when looking for accommodation (See Housing section).

Electricity is distributed at 220V 50Hz, and the outlets and wall sockets take two round-pin plugs. If you need a converter (a plug adapter), it is advisable to bring one, as they can be difficult to find in Lebanon, especially outside of Beirut. Note that in general, earthed plugs are rare, and a power-spike or cut may cause harm to your electronic equipment.
