Getting Around

Beirut’s abundance of streets is not easy to navigate by. Several streets have multiple names, others remain nameless and there is a complete absence of street numbers. A simple map of the city, such as the yellow Zawarib ‘Welcome to Beirut’ booklet, can be obtained at most hotels, bookstores and the tourist office. If you stay longer, consider buying the Zawarib Beirut Road Atlas, a very helpful English A-Z street map.

Going around by car, one should keep in mind that traffic in, from and to Beirut during rush hours can be excessive. On Saturday mornings, the same applies for traffic from Beirut, while on Sunday evenings huge traffic jams to Beirut are not an exception.

Due to its compact size, Beirut is easy to explore on foot. While walking, one should be alert on Lebanon’s chaotic and anarchist way of driving, given that speeding, running red lights and random parking is a daily reality.
