The rugged and remote area of Hermel and surroundings is located about 50 kilometers north of Baalbek and 143 kilometers from Beirut. Life there is traditional, with Bedouin tribes and their livestock inhabiting the beautiful mountain slopes.

Known for its fast flowing Nahr el-Assi (Orontes River), the area is ideal for rafting and kayaking. Eco-lodging is plentiful there, with most places offering traditional housing and delicious home cooking. They make the perfect base for visiting the area's ancient monuments, performing outdoor activities or enjoying a moment of rest and relaxation.

Note that summers there can be extremely hot, while in winter snow is not uncommon.

Note: By the time of writing, due the ongoing war in Syria, the safety in the area of Hermel and surroundings could not be guaranteed. Before planning a trip to this area, it is advisable to check the latest developments.
