Shehabi Citadel
Situated on a hill overlooking the Hasbani River, this large six-floor citadel is part of the 20,000 m2 Shehabi complex, which also covers several medieval houses and a mosque. Originally a Crusader castle, or possibly even an Arab or Roman structure, it was confiscated by the Shehab family in 1170. They rebuilt the citadel and added the Ottoman-style upper floor in the early 19th century.

The building is highly decorated - with lions symbolizing the family - and includes courtyards, balconies, staircases and beautiful black and white stonework. The three subterranean floors contain dungeons and tunnels and the top of the Crusader tower - accessible by a very narrow staircase - offers good views of the rest of the complex. The complex suffered from many battles and conflicts, most recently during the Israeli occupations between 1978 and 2000, and debates on restoration are still ongoing.

Note: The entire complex is still inhabited by several members of the numerous branches of the Shehab family and therefore cannot be visited other than during organized festivities.
