In 1866, the American University of Beirut (AUB) was initiated as a protestant American missionary center by Dr. Daniel Bliss. With its first building constructed on the present campus in 1873, the AUB nowadays is a worldwide respected, private, non-sectarian, English spoken University. The beautiful green campus area is good for a stroll around and to get an impression of Beirut’s student life. The entrances of the campus are on Bliss Street and on the intersection of Clemenceau Street and John Kennedy Street. Note that the entrance on the seaside is not accessible for visitors. The University also has a museum of Lebanese and Middle Eastern artifacts.

Other Universities in Beirut are the St Joseph University (USJ), the Lebanese American University (LAU) and the Beirut Arab University (BAU).
