Slim Residence, Haret Hreik, next to al-Mahdy Mosque

Located in al-Dahiye, the southern suburbs of Beirut, UMAM  opened its doors in ‘The Hangar’ in 2005. Already in 2006, Israeli warfare in the area forced them to cancel many scheduled projects and events. In 2007, the hangar reopened and in 2010, the wing of the building transformed into a reading room for UMAM’s library and archives. The Hangar is an effort to bring back the cultural diversity, without ignoring the real transformations that have occurred there over time. The space hosts events such as exhibitions, screenings, workshops, performances and round tables. The Hangar provides a library and archive with publications and books on Lebanon’s history, as well as on art and culture related to memory. It also hosts a small café and a shop where you can find UMAM publications and DVDs. The Hangar is open from Wednesday through Sunday, from 14:00 until 20:00.
