Sights & Activities

The first and most interesting part of Tripoli is the old medieval center (old city), located just west of the polluted Abu Ali River and home to around 45 monumental buildings. Given that most constructions are in poor state - although restoration is ongoing - a selection of these monumental madrassesmosqueskhans and hammams has been made. You will notice that some of the monuments are kept locked. In that case, a key can usually be obtained from one of the nearby shops. The best way to explore this old city area and its monuments is by wandering around its small alleyways and souqs. As it is easy to lose direction, you could also consider to arranging a local guide. Mira Minkara’s weekend tours (+961 70 126 764, Facebook: Mira’s guide tours in Tripoli !) is a good option.

The port area of al-Mina, occupied by small eateries and seafood restaurants, is located about three kilometers west of the old city and therefore best reached by taxi (about 5,000 LBP). It is interesting to note that the ancient site of Tripoli - before Mamluk rule - lies buried under this new area.

Situated between the old center and the harbor, modern Tripoli offers some attractive shops and restaurants.
