The protected natural forest area of Bentael Nature Reserve, located about eight kilometers east of Byblos and on the right bank of Bentael River, offers several clearly signposted hiking trails. Although the total reserve just covers two square kilometers - ranging between 300 and 850 meters above sea level - you can easily spend a few hours given that the paths are narrow and mostly very steep.

The reserve has three entrances: Belle Vue, Carob Tree and Pinewood. If you prefer walking down, the best place to start your hike is at the highest Belle Vue entrance and descend from there. Inside the reserve, there is the 12th-century St John’s rock-cut hermitage and chapel, located eight meters above the ground and composed of three cavities. Wear long trousers and proper hiking shoes and bring food and water, since there are no restaurants around.

Click 'transportation' in the menu for directions on how to get there.
