Jeita Grotto

The astonishing nine kilometers long cave of Jeita Grotto has some splendid and stunning rock formations and is filled with beautiful stalactites and stalagmites - a must see if you visit Lebanon. 

During the Civil War, the Lebanese Forces used the cave as a munition storage facility. After 15 months of reconstruction, the badly damaged site reopened in 1995.

The cave has two levels that can be visited. The upper grotto, reachable by cable car or a Disney-like train, provides a 750-meter long walking tour and is definitely the most interesting part. In the 7800-meter long lower water basin - the source of Nahr el-Kalb - you can cruise in a boat over a distance of 450 meters, yet high water levels during winter sometimes require closure of this part. Jeita Grotto is closed on Monday and the entrance fee is around 18,000 LBP (10,000 for children). A visit to both levels will take about 90 minutes. Photography is not permitted inside the caves.

If you feel like combining your visit to Jeita Grotto with a genuine mezze experience with yummy twists on the creative side, head to the nearby Fouad. This small restaurant, hidden at the end of a little road in an afforested surrounding, serves divine and delicious food with a story behind each dish. From Jeita Grotto it is a 20 minute’ drive land inwards toward Ajaltoun, where you turn right after the Al Halabi restaurant. From here, follow the road for another 5 minutes and then turn right at the T-fork. If you get lost, don’t hesitate to call the restaurant for directions.
